That didn’t sit well with me. Not a typical fluff filled romance, but very very good!
Desert Isle Keeper
Leila is a strong, independent heroine, but one that inhabits the time period. Still, I’m going to have to solve this murder, if only to keep it from going public. All this I liked, the story, the writing, and I liked the mystery too, which managed to surprise me to a certain extent. Kali ini sang hero adalah Esmond yg sblmnya adalah Ismal, tokoh antagonis di novel The Lion’s Daughter.
I can certainly enjoy a good spitfire heroine, but when they behave like Leila sometimes did, they just become gratingly annoying to me. She surprises him with her fascination for the bits he does reveal when he expected her to react with shock and disgust, thereby winning a small chunk of his soul by recognizing the emotional cost he has paid in carrying out the necessary, but often dirty, business of the government.
Instead, she focuses on who she was able to become an artist because of him. View all 4 comments. Curse your distracting sexiness!
Given that that her husband was a cruel and vicious character with a tendency for blackmailing, this wasn’t a surprise. D’Esmond may have been working for the Home Office as an agent for the last ten years, but there are dark deeds in his past, and he realises that some of them affected Leila indirectly. When the intriguing Comte d’Esmond enters a room, women swoon and men gnash their teeth.
Newer Post Older Post Home. Kate Reading did a good job on the narration of this audio version.
The third book in the series is Lord of Scoundrelsbut the ties between it and Captives of the Night are extremely minimal, which would explain why I was able to read Lord of Scoundrels without really feeling like anything was missing. Ismal aka Comte d’Esmond made a very brief appearance in Lord of Scoundrels at the Vingt-Huit pleasure palace in Paris where Dain, the hero capgives that book, was engaging in debauchery with thhe friends.
I also enjoyed the couple of brief moments when she was playing the consummate seductress, and it was nice that lorettta had cunning sleuthing skills equal to Ismal’s.
A definite winner and a keeper for anyone’s bookshelf. Aug 25, Miranda Davis rated it did not like it Recommends it for: She just knows that the very beautiful man made her uneasy in Paris and now again in London, when the world seems ready to call her a murderess. Can’t say enough how good Kate Reading is reading this author.
There is too much of a mystery element to the story and the romance is probably noght most angst-filled of all of Loretta Chase ‘s books. Where is LC’s quicksilver wit and spot-on prose? I caught myself several times thinking ‘it is really good! If that’s your thing, you may find this more interesting.
Captives is the sequel to The Lion’s Daughter where Comte d’ Esmond Ismal is his nighf name was the villain of that story and now he is the hero and after liretta years he is back with a vengeance but on the right side of Loretta Chase is an incredible writer and with Captives of the Night, she writes a near perfect book.
Aug 29, Carolyn rated it it was amazing Shelves: Leila woke up groggy and disorientated in the carriage of Francis Beaumont, who claimed he loretya rescued her from burglars, breaking the news of her father’s death to her.
Their marriage is not a peaceful one, however, which is why Leila is the prime suspect when Francis turns up dead. Neither Leila, nor Esmond is especially happy to be working together – their relationship is one of intense attraction accompanied by intense resistance. But he was and there wasn’t any. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Lord of Scoundrelswhich is highly praised captivez rated.
No one was truly good or bad, not even the wretched deceased husband. Where she has a tantrum that wrecks her art studio, then fights—loudly—with Francis. He’s thhe, but also just dangerous enough that I could believe in a villainous past or at least one full of seriously bad judgment. She’s all surly, aloof resistance and he’s all courtly, guilty devotion. Esmond, with a carefully hidden identity that would shock Leila to the core and Leila with her own secrets to keep All immoral behavior was brushed off in a far too casual and accepting way, chae nearly everyone making excuses for everyone else.
Also, so glad we got to see Esme’s formidable grandmother again. Getting rid of an unwanted balls in chain pun intended was the only way for the true romance to move on. We see a man with a very modern haircut peeping through some bed hangings or curtains; he’s fhase a definite five o’clock shadow and completely hairless arms waxed?
Every character is distinct, and if you weren’t already in love with Ismal, you will be, when you encounter him here via Ms Reading’s voice.
Gossamer Obsessions: “Captives of the Night,” by Loretta Chase
I found it very well executed, not unlike plots in books of my favourite romance writer, Njght Milan. When acptives comes to the seduction — it was really realistic. I suffered through almost all of this, the only L. Ismal is an equally strong hero, with a complex backstory. It was a good romance May 14, Julianna rated it it was ok Shelves: While she’s long since dissuaded him with violence from her bed, she knows he won’t hesitate to reveal her secret and ruin her if she embarks upon an affair of her own.
I want that one! What a great way to start the morning.
She also has this very childish temper – she loves to destroy things – and thinks she knows better than everybody.
