I take her point, but a novel like this – hoiseboy by a contemporary of colonialism – makes me more convinced than ever that she’s wrong. The first “exercise book” starts with Toundi living with his family. However Toundi continues to disagree with the oppression of the white man and the hypocrisy of Christianity.
